Four events marking a weekend of remembrance will be held on October 26-27 in observance of the 20th anniversary of the dedication of the Philadelphia Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
The weekend will start Friday, October 26 at 7:30 p.m. with the traditional candlelight reading of the names of the 646 of the fallen honored at the Memorial by Liberty Bell Chapter 266 of the Vietnam Veterans of America. Individuals wishing to read names should contact Chapter President Tom Murtha at reconrelay@comcast.net.
Following the ceremony at 9 p.m. will be a showing of the 1987 movie, “Good Morning Vietnam,” featuring Robin Williams in the role of disc jockey Adrian Cronauer. Appearing at the showing will be Cronauer, upon whom Williams’ character is based. Veterans and others are invited to the free showing at the Independence Seaport Museum.
On Saturday, October 27, The Philadelphia Vietnam Veterans Memorial
Society will host a POW - MIA Remembrance Ceremony at Noon. Veteran organizations that wish to participate, either with a Color Guard or laying of a wreath are asked to contact Andy Keenan at ajk2421vet@aol.com or by calling 267-259-6763.
At 2 p.m. the Philadelphia Vietnam Veterans Memorial Advisory Fund, the nonprofit organization working with the Fairmount Park in providing oversight to the Memorial, will hold the official rededication ceremony at 2 p.m. For more information, contact Mike Daily at Mdirtdart101@aol.com or 267-973-0600.
Keynote speaker at the ceremony will be Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Ronald D. Castille, who was instrumental in the effort to get the Memorial built in 1987.
Chapter 266, the Memorial Society and the PVVMAF invite all veterans and interested Philadelphians to attend and recall the sacrifice of those honored at the Memorial.
