Noting that the spirit of the 646 resides at the Memorial which “we consider to be sacred ground,” Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Ronald D. Castille delivered the keynote address at the rededication ceremonies on October 27.

“Most of us returned home somewhat battered, somewhat broken and perhaps even disillusioned,” Justice Castille added. Veterans of current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will face their own challenges. “We face a new war, a war of global dimensions… with no foreseeable end, “he said. “Sadly we will build more memorials to new generations of warrior heroes.”

PECO Energy has become the first major corporate sponsor of the “Duty to Remember” Campaign to raise $2 million for the preservation and protection of the Philadelphia Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

Chief Operating Officer Craig Adams presented a check for $15,000 to the Philadelphia Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (PVVMF), the nonprofit organization that oversees the Memorial with the Fairmount Park Commission, during ceremonies honoring PECO veterans on Friday, November 9.

Accepting the check was Terry A. Williamson, fund president, who noted that “PECO Energy has been with the Memorial from the start and a consistent supporter over the past 20 years. Once again PECO has demonstrated its corporate citizenship, not only in recognizing veteran’s contributions but also in helping preserve this Penn’s Landing landmark.”

Our new Remembrances Blog is now live and ready to use. We hope this is a way for anyone to share his or her memories of the 646 honored on our wall or tell us what the Memorial means to them. Veterans and others might find it interesting to share thoughts about the war and its aftermath. Think of it as a living testimony to those who served and sacrificed. To use the new blog you must create a separate member account for the blog.

PHILADELPHIA (October 10, 2007) - The Philadelphia Vietnam Veterans Memorial will cap a weekend of remembrance with a rededication ceremony on October 27 at 2 p.m. in observance of the 20th anniversary of the Memorial at Front and Spruce Streets.

Keynote speaker at the ceremony will be Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Ronald D. Castille, who was instrumental in the effort to get the Memorial built in 1987.

The ceremony is being held by the Philadelphia Vietnam Veterans Memorial Advisory Fund (PVVMAF), the nonprofit organization working with Fairmount Park in providing oversight to the Memorial. The PVVMAF has launched a “Duty to Remember” Campaign to raise $2 million for the restoration and preservation of the aging Memorial, which has deteriorated with time due to the weather, as well as man-made damage, such as by skateboarders.
