Philadelphia (October 2, 2005) –Land lubbers move over. The Philadelphia Council of the Navy League celebrates the founding of the Navy in 1775 with the annual Navy Day Luncheon on October 14 at the Union League.

Philadelphia’s proud naval tradition is not widely known. Today’s U.S. Navy gets its heritage from the Continental Navy founded on October 13, 1775 in Philadelphia. The Congress authorized the commissioning of two armed vessels to cruise in search of munitions ships supplying the British Army in America. Eventually, the Continental Navy numbered some 50 ships over the course of the war, with approximately twenty warships active at its maximum strength
The guest of honor and keynote speaker for the noon luncheon is Rear Admiral Richard A. Buchanan, USN (Retired), the President and Chief Executive Officer of the U.S. Navy Memorial Foundation in Washington. Attending the annual event will be Navy League members, active duty military officers, political and business leaders.

The Navy League is unique among military-oriented associations in that it is a civilian organization dedicated to the support of the men and women of the sea services and their families. To this end the Philadelphia Council works closely with the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marine facilities throughout the area, with programs and activities such as the Naval Sea Cadet Corp, scholarships, sponsoring ship visits, supporting active duty military; commissioning ceremonies; award programs; and other recognition programs.

To get additional information about the Luncheon, or the Navy League, call (215) 557-0979 or visit www.NavyLeaguePhilly.org.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Our area suffered from a devastating loss as three Pennsylvania National Guardsmen serving in Iraq were killed in action this week.

View The Channel 10 News Video

Just weeks before he left to train for service in Iraq, Gennaro Pellegrini Jr. fulfilled a dream by winning his first professional boxing match with a fourth-round knockout at the famous Blue Horizon boxing arena.

His boxing trainer, Charlie Sgrillo, said Pellegrini had to fight hard for that victory, taking his share of punches and working through his exhaustion to get the win.

“It was almost like a championship fight, that’s how exciting it was,” Sgrillo said Wednesday. “He just hit this kid with an overhand right. The place just exploded.”

Later, Sgrillo recalled telling Pellegrini to remember the skills and determination he displayed in the ring whenever things got tough in Iraq.

“Unfortunately, this is the real world and it doesn’t work out like the movies,” Sgrillo said.

Pellegrini’s pro debut in May 2004 received local media attention, partly because was a police officer and partly because he would be leaving to train for Iraq shortly afterward. In those reports, Pellegrini conceded being “mad” about his service being extended through the military’s stop-loss program; he had been two weeks away from completing his guard service.
