Harris entered the Marine Corps in June 1964 after working as a stock boy and order filler. The 22-year-old lance corporal was a rifleman and fire team leader with Company E of the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines, 3rd Marine Division. He died in Da Nang, Quang Nam Province, on June 9, 1966.
