Newell graduated from Simon Gratz High School and packed goods in boxes for two years before entering the Army on June 18, 1958. The private first class, a machine gunner, was sent to Vietnam in Novemher 1968 and assigned to Company B of the 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry, 196th Light Infantry Brigade. Newell died on June 10, 1969, at the age of 20. He was survived by his wife
