After deciding to "fight for my country," as he told friends. Shubert left Thomas Edison High School in August 1966 and enlisted in the Marine Corps with the reluctant permission of his parents. The 18-year-old private first class came home in early 1967 to be married. Shubert was an ammunition carrier with Company L of Battalion Landing Team 3. 1st Marines in Vietnam where he died two days after Christmas Day 1967. "Darnay was a young boy. quite young to be in the Marine Corps. Very young to be 11,000 miles from his family, certainly too young to die," read a passage in the program banded out at his funeral. In addition to his wife, he was survived by a son, his parents, three brothers, and four sisters.
