Smith left Overbrook High School in the 11th grade to enlist in the Marine Corps in June 1962. The 20-year-old corporal had been in Vietnam for about six months when be and 57 other servicemen died in the crash 0 C Vietnambound military transport plane in Hong Kong harbor on Aug. 24, 1965. The crash also took the life of John T. Povey. another Philadelphia Marine. Smith bad been a fire team leader in Company B of the 1st Battalion, 4th Marines, 3rd Marine Division. He was survived by his mother, a brother and two sisters.
