Smith met the woman be would marry when they were in junior high school, but her Ia-ther would not let him visit the young woman for two years. On his first visit. he brought her a wedding band and they mar-ned. Smith was a salesman for Dixie�s Mens Shop, 4100 Lancaster Ave., for three years before entering the Army in June 1965. He had attended West Philadelphia High School. The 21-year-old private first class, a rifleman, was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company of the 4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry, 25th Infantry Division, in Vietnam. Smith died on May 26, 1966. He was a good friend of Burgess Love of Philadelphia, who died in Vietnam on March 6, 1967. He was survived by his wife, parents, two brothers and a daughter born two weeks after his funeral.
