The 39-year-old career soldier saw action in three wars. He enlisted in the Army at 15 and served in World War II and Korea before being assigned to Vietnam, where he was a medical specialist and section sergeant in Headquarters Company, 326th Medical Battalion, 101st Air-borne Division. The staff sergeant died near Saigon on Jan. 31, 1968, the day after the Viet Cong launched the Tet Offensive. He was survived by his wife, a son, daughter and stepdaughter.
