The 44-year-old Air Force pilot considered Philadelphia his home. He had flown many combat missions over South and North Vietnam when he disappeared on July 2, 1968, over South Vietnam on a flight from Da Nang, Quang Nam Province. The colonel was born in St. Clair, PA, and received degrees from Oklahoma State and Florida State universities. Tipping, one of nine MIAs from Philadelphia, was awarded the Silver Star. Survivors include two daughters.
