Tomon came from a family of Marines. His mother had been a Marine during World War II. His father was stationed at Camp Lejeune, N.C., when the 22-year-old lance corporal was sent to Vietnam and assigned to G Battery of the 3rd Battalion, 12th Marines, 3rd Marine Division. Tomon had graduated from Valley Forge Military Academy and attended Philadelphia Community College. The field radio operator died in Quang Tri Province, Vietnam, on June 6, 1968. He was survived by his parents.
