Whittle was posthumously awarded the Silver Star after spending a night in a foxhole under heavy fire protecting two wounded buddies. The 1966 George Washington High School graduate worked as a sheet metal apprentice for three months before being into the Army in September 1966. The 20-year-old corporal, a rifleman in Company C of the 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), died on May 9, 1969. He was survived by his parents, a brother and two sisters.
