Williams was killed by enemy fire on Sept. 23, 1966, while running across an open field to help a severely wounded buddy. He was always helping others, his mother recalled, and frequently quoted from the Bible. He once wrote home from Vietnam: "Greater love hath no man than to lay down his life for a friend," The 22-year-old Army specialist four was posthumously awarded the Silver Star. A rifleman, he had been assigned to Company A of the 2nd Battalion. 12th Cavalry. 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). Williams had attended Benjamin Franklin High School. He was survived by his parents. six brothers and three sisters.
