The 20-year-old Marine lance corporal worked as an auto mechanic for several months after graduating from Dobbins Vocational High School in 1964. He and longtime friend Alvin E. Jackson enlisted in the Marine Corps in January 1965 and trained together at Parris Island, S.C., and Camp Lejeune, N.C., before being sent to Vietnam in March 1966. Both were killed by shrapnel in separate battles near Da Nang. Baugh, a rifleman and ammunition carrier with Company C of the 1st Battalion, 9th Marines, 3rd Marine Division, died on July 23, 1966. Jackson died on Nov. 19, 1966, while on patrol with Company I of the 3rd Battalion, 9th Marines, Baugh was survived by his parents, a brother and three sisters.
