Burton was awarded a four-year scholarship to the Pennsylvania Institute of Technology in Upper Darby after graduating from Thomas Edison High School in 1968. He declined the offer, explaining that he could get similar electronics training in the Marine Corps and serve his country at the same time. The 19-year-old private first class joined Company B of the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division, in September 1969. He died in Quang Nam Province, Vietnam on Feb. 12, 1970. He was survived by his1parents, a brother and three sisters.
