A native North Carolinian, Cauthen came to Philadelphia with his father in 1966 and got work as a short order cook. He enlisted in May 1967 and planned to be a career Marine. The 19.-year-old private first class was a rifle-man with Company F, Battalion Landing Team 2, 4th Marines, 9th Marine Amphibious Brigade. He died in Quang Tri Province, Vietnam, on March 7, 1968. Cauthen was engaged to be married. He was survived by his parents and several brothers and sisters.
