Durant left West Philadelphia High School in January 1967 for a career in the Army. The 18-year-old private first class, an assistant machine-gunner with Company A of the 3rd Battalion, 60th Infantry, 9th Infantry Division, died in Vietnam on Jan. 17. 1968. He was survived by his parents. five sisters and three brothers.
