Thomas K. Lyons of McMahon Street, Germantown, is remembered as a hard-working athlete who graduated from Cardinal Dougherty High School in 1965. He was honored by his peers as the Outstanding Football Player and this annual award was later renamed the Thomas K. Lyons Award in his memory. Prior to being drafted into the Army in 1967, Lyons worked full-time and attended technical school. The Private First Class Rifleman was assigned to Company A of the Fourth Battalion, 31st Infantryman, 196th Infantry Brigade. He told his family he was glad to be sent to Vietnam because he could better serve his country. Lyons died on May 1, 1968, in Thua Thien Province and was survived by his mother, five brothers and four sisters.
