Monaghan graduated from Northeast Catholic High School in 1966, and worked for the John B. Stetson Co. as an accounting clerk before enlisting in the Marine Corps in October 1967. The rifleman was sent to Vietnam, where he was assigned to Company E of the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines, 9th Marine Amphibious Brigade. Monaghan died in Quang Nam Province, Vietnam, on Dec. 10, 1968. He was survived by his parents. The 20-year-old lance corporal was one of at least 11 young men from the Fishtown-KensingtonPort Rich-mond neighborhoods to die in Vietnam or be missing in action. All are honored on the Cpl. Charles J. Glenn 3rd Memorial in Fishtown, dedicated in 1967 and one of the first memorials to Vietnam veterans erected in the United States.
