Walters joined the Army in 1968 to get away front the gang violence and other trouble plaguing his North Philadelphia neighborhood. The 19-year-old private first class was assigned to the 173rd Airborne Bnigade in Vietnam, A crane he was operating toppled into the Saigon River at Phu Cuong, northwest of Saigon, on May 10, 1969, and Walters was presumed to have drowned. His body was not recovered. He was survived by his parents and five sisters.
