1st Annual Philadelphia Veterans Parade
On Sunday, November 8, 2015, The Philadelphia Vietnam Veterans Memorial (PVVM) Fund participated in the first official Philadelphia Veterans Parade. The JrROTC from Frankford High School accompanied the PVVM contingent and carried 35 replica panels with the names of the 648 Philadelphians from the Philadelphia Vietnam Veterans Memorial’s Wall of Names.
People lined up early in Center City on Sunday to pay tribute to Philadelphia-area veterans and the parade was televised on WPVI 6ABC. There were about 2,000 participants in the parade and almost 200 organizations marched through Center City, including marching bands, youth groups, businesses – and, of course, military units.
The mile-long parade route began at Broad and Walnut Streets. Participants proceeded north to Philadelphia City Hall then east on Market Street. The parade ended at Independence Mall where the All-Veterans Parachute Team dropped on the plaza in front of Independence Hall.
Both Maj. Gen. Wes Craig, the PVVM Veterans Day speaker, and Terry Williamson, president of the PVVM Fund, served on the committee that organized the parade. The 2nd Annual Philadelphia Veterans Parade is planned for November 6, 2016.
