"War is hell and it�s getting worse every minute," wrote Newby in his last letter home from Vietnam. In the same letter, he told his youngest sister how to take care of a music box he had sent for her birthday. Newby attended Lincoln High School and worked as a tool and die maker for Bachman Brothers on E. Erie Avenue. The son of a World War II veteran who saw action in the South Pacific, he enlisted in the Marine Corps on Feb. 5, 1965. The lance corporal, a rifleman, was stationed at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for five months before being sent to Vietnam and assigned to Company K of the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division. Newby died in Quang Nam Province on Aug. 6, 1967. He was 21 years old. Survivors included his mother and three sisters.
